1. The state motto is "Oro y Plata" (Gold and Silver); the state name is from Spanish (and Latin) as well.
2. It's the only state that borders three different Canadian provinces. Montana is slightly larger than Japan in size, and it's the largest landlocked state in the U.S.
3. The Bitterroot Mountains are one of the longest continous ranges in the Rocky Mountain Range.
4. The rivers of Montana feed into the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and Hudson Bay (in Canada).
5. Conflict between indigenous people and immigrants desiring to settle in the Territory led to numerous battles during the late 1800s.
6. Currently, each Indian Reservation in the state has a fully accredited tribal college. All schools, from pre-K through post-secondary, are required to teach American Indian history, culture and heritage.
