1. The state motto is l'etoile du nord, "the star of the North"

2. The state's lowest point is at Lake Superior. At 602 feet above sea level, it's higher than the highest point in Florida, Louisiana, or Delaware.

3. The root word for the state name as well as many other place names in the state (minne) is the Dakota word for water. Sota does not mean a carbonated beverage, however.

4. Only Alaska has more wetlands than Minnesota.

5. Saint Anthony Falls on the Mississippi River provided power for flour mills in the 1800s. By 1900, Minnesota mills were grinding 14% of the nation's grain.

6. St. Paul has been the capital since the organization of Minnesota Territory.
